Frequently asked questions about our premium teas and the ritual of brewing the perfect cup.
Real tea comes from the tea plant *Camellia sinensis*. This includes black tea, green tea, white tea, and oolong tea. All these teas naturally contain caffeine. Herbal infusions, such as our French Vanilla rooibos or fruit infusions like Strawberry Island, do not contain leaves from the tea plant, but rather dried herbs, fruits, flowers, or rooibos. These are naturally 100% caffeine-free.
The perfect cup of tea depends on the type of tea you brew. Black tea and rooibos infusions thrive at a high temperature (90-95°C) and a steeping time of 3 to 5 minutes (rooibos can go longer, up to 7-10 minutes). Green tea, on the other hand, is delicate and burns with boiling water, creating a bitter taste. We advise brewing green tea (such as TWG Silver Moon) with water at 80°C and steeping for no longer than 2-3 minutes.
Chai (originally 'Masala Chai' from India) is a robust black tea blend infused with warm spices like cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper. Since Masala Chai has a black tea base, it naturally contains caffeine (theine) providing a mild, sustained energy boost. Chai is traditionally brewed in hot milk with honey for a creamy Chai Latte.
Standard tea bags often contain tea dust and 'fannings' (tiny tea particles). These release color and flavor quickly but lack the complex essential oils of whole tea leaves. Loose-leaf tea consists of larger leaves and buds that have the space to fully unfold while steeping, resulting in a much smoother, richer flavor experience without bitterness.

Loose-leaf tea preserves its aroma and flavor best when stored in a cool, dry, dark, and airtight container. Exposure to air, light, moisture, and strong smells (like kitchen spices) causes tea leaves to lose their essential oils. Our premium teas and the TWG Tea tins are designed to protect the tea. Preferably use stainless steel or tin containers and keep them in a closed cabinet.

The amount of caffeine varies greatly by tea type. Black tea contains the highest concentration of caffeine, averaging about 40 mg per cup. Green tea contains less (around 20 mg), and white tea even less (around 15 mg). Herbal and fruit infusions, such as rooibos (e.g. our French Vanilla) and chamomile, are naturally 100% caffeine-free, making them ideal for the evening or for caffeine-sensitive drinkers.
Yes, organic loose-leaf tea is free from synthetic pesticides and artificial fertilizers, which is better for both your health and the environment. At Golden Leaves, we exclusively select tea from estates that practice sustainable farming methods. This not only protects the biodiversity and soil of the tea gardens, but also ensures a purer, richer flavor without any chemical aftertaste.
Before bedtime, we recommend caffeine-free herbal infusions or rooibos. Chamomile (such as TWG Chamomile) is globally renowned for its soothing effect thanks to antioxidants that help reduce stress. Our French Vanilla rooibos is also an excellent, naturally sweet choice that calms the nervous system without disrupting your sleep cycle.
Absolutely! Unlike standard tea bags, which release all their flavor at once, high-quality loose-leaf tea (such as our black tea blends or TWG green teas) can often be steeped two to three times. With each successive infusion, different, more subtle flavor notes are released. Extend the steeping time by one minute for the second and third infusions.
